It is one of the most common questions I got asked as a makeup artist — and the honest answer is that there is no single right answer. Each tool does something different, and knowing what that is changes everything. These tools are not competing. They are complementary.
Fingers — The Most Underrated Tool
Most people dismiss fingers entirely, and that is a mistake. Your fingers are warm, and that warmth melts product into the skin in a way no brush or sponge can replicate. Personally, I love applying and blending colour corrector and concealer with my fingers — especially under the eyes and around the mouth. The warmth of your fingertip works the product into the skin for a finish that looks like it came from within, not something sitting on top.
That said, there is a lot fingers cannot do. Around the nose, along the hairline, for anything requiring precision — that is where they fall short. And that is where brushes come in.
Best for: colour corrector, concealer, skin tints, tinted moisturiser, cream blush patted onto the cheeks.
Brushes — My Personal Preference
Honestly, brushes have always been my personal preference — over everything. Maybe that is partly why I launched Vyraa, because I care deeply about what goes into a brush. Every bristle, every texture, every handle shape, every type of hair — it all matters. Each brush has its own purpose, and the thing I love most about working with brushes is that there are no rigid rules. There are suggestions and preferences, yes, but you can use one brush in ten different ways. Everyone blends differently. Everyone has their own technique. That is what makes brushes so endlessly versatile — how you use them is what matters most.
A good brush gives you control that fingers and sponges simply cannot match. The shape of the bristle head determines exactly where product goes and how it blends. For foundation, a flat or angled brush presses product into the skin and blends it out in the same motion — the Vyraa AirBlend Foundation Brush is built exactly for this. For contour, an angled brush follows the bone structure naturally — try the Vyraa EarthBlend Makeup Brush. For powder, a large dome brush distributes product evenly without disturbing what is underneath. Brushes also work across every formula — liquid, cream, and powder.
Best for: foundation, concealer, contour, blush, powder, highlighter — practically everything, with practice.

Sponge — The Great Corrector
To be honest, sponges have not always been my first choice — but I have come to appreciate exactly what they do well. A damp sponge is brilliant when you have applied too much product. Too much concealer, too heavy a hand with cream blush or foundation — a damp sponge absorbs the excess and blends everything out seamlessly. It corrects beautifully in a way that is very hard to do with a brush.
Sponges are also genuinely wonderful for personal use. As much as I love brushes, they do require technique to use efficiently. With a sponge, all you need to do is tap, tap, tap — and your foundation is blended seamlessly. Low learning curve, high-quality result.
And then there is the Vyraa BrewBlend Sponge. I will be honest — I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. It comes in a coffee tumbler-shaped holder, and it just looks so good on a vanity. We launched it in two shades — espresso brown and blush pink — and both are genuinely some of my favourite shades we carry. The sponge itself is non-latex, soft, and expands beautifully when damp for that seamless, skin-like finish.
Best for: blending out excess product, correcting mistakes, easy everyday foundation application, cream product layering.
So Which Should You Use?
All three — just for different things. Use your fingers for warmth and sheerness where skin contact does something a tool cannot. Use brushes for precision, control, and versatility across your full routine. Use a sponge to blend, correct, and finish. The best kits use all three.
